The Clinic & Facilities

It is now several years after the war began many Iraqis still do not have access to the most basic health care. There is a lack of qualified staff as many have died or fled the country. Many hospitals and health care facilities have not been properly maintained. Because of poor security conditions in much of the country, the sick and injured are often cut off from access to medical services. Many lives are lost and disability increased because prompt, appropriate and sufficient medical care in not available.

Because of this St Georges has given some of its precious limited Church space over to be transformed into a small dental and medical centre. Many of the congregation suffer from poor health due to poor conditions as do the surrounding community. The clinic also offers much needed relief and also brings employment to the area. With a heart for reconciliation, health professionals who are Jewish, Christian and Muslim are serving all faiths together as they provide care for all communities. There are 4 dentists, 4 doctors, a pharmacy, a laboratory and even the hospital is now referring people to St George’s Clinic. Canon White, who started off his career in the medical profession, oversees the clinic but otherwise the clinics are managed and staffed by local Iraqis. There is also a Pharmacy which supplies the clinic and the patients’ needs.

The church also runs a Christian bookshop which was opened very recently. This important resource centre will help Iraqi Christians to learn more about their faith and offers an educational environment for the church’s members.
