Faiz - the first ever Iraqi Ordinand
07/07/10
Much has been written and reported about Canon Andrew White and his fascinating vocation; leading a church in the midst of war, terror and fierce religious sectarianism. The tenure of the so-called Vicar of Baghdad has thus far been littered with a multitude of medals, awards and deserved recognition for his pursuit of peace.
For many years there has been a key character, standing in the breach, while Canon White ferries to and from his sleepy Hampshire suburb where he returns to rally support and crucial funds. Faiz Basheer has been the lay pastor of St. George’s Church for several years and this Sunday he will be ordained – the first Iraqi in the history of the Anglican Communion.
Coming up: a more in depth feature and interview with the newly ordained minister.
